Acupuncture is an ancient medical practice that uses very thin needles to gently but powerfully stimulate our innate self-healing powers, creating treatment pathways for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Alone or in combination with other natural modalities, the movement of Yin-Yang energies promotes repair, maintenance and optimal well-being.
Given its wide versatility, acupuncture safely and effectively addresses:
- Low Energy
- Digestive Problems
- Chronic Inflammation
- Poor Sleep
- Colds and Allergies
- Cancer Recovery
Acupuncture treatments are strengthened when combined with Chinese herbal formulas and other natural modalities, such as Cupping, Moxibustion (a warming technique) and Qi Gong, an ancient art of moving and meditation. Dietary changes and stress management are often recommended.
In modern times, acupuncture has expanded to include electro-acupuncture, nutritional supplements and the use of natural injectables such as vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin and Homeopathics, in various acupuncture points.

Because of its widespread use by Olympic swimmers, cupping is more popular than ever. This suction technique releases muscle tension and joint pain by breaking up soft-tissue adhesions and attracting blood flow. The same powerful action makes Cupping useful for reducing fevers and lung congestion in cases of cold, asthma, flu and bronchitis. Just one cupping session can make a big difference.

Cupping technique that uses suction to release muscle tension in and around joints and draw healing blood flow to injured and painful sites (remember all those eye-popping red circles on the Olympic swimmers?).
By moving energy and opening up the pores, Cupping can also reduce fever and lung congestion in cases of colds, flu, asthma, allergies and bronchitis.
In Moxibustion, compressed Mugwort is heated and gently placed over an acupuncture point – or an injury – to stimulate healing Qi flow. Mugwort heat is known to easily penetrate the tissue and remain for long-lasting action.
Tuina Acupressure Therapy
Tuina, or “Push-Pull” in Chinese, is another ancient form of energy movement that promotes natural healing through touch. In addition to applying pressure at acupuncture points, various other techniques increase blood circulation, open up the meridians and dissolve stagnations. Ideal for treating stiff joints, the numbness, burning and tingling of neuropathies and, in the elderly, constipation.
Electro-Stimulation involves attaching charged alligators clips set at various frequencies to provide a more constant stimulation of certain acupuncture points. Great for reducing muscle tension in pain issues!
Gua Sha is the use of a smooth-edged stone to relieve muscle tension and pain. People are frequently surprised by how effective, yet gentle, it is. A variety of long and short strokes release stagnated blood and fascia, The treatment site can get very red. Longer strokes across muscle groups and joints free up fascia while enabling greater structural integration in the body.

Acupuncture, as I like to describe it to my patients, taps into the “musical notes” of our bodies and minds.
It acknowledges chaos but seeks harmony.
My passion for natural healing evolved incrementally but forcefully through family illness, personal experience and my own critical observations of mainstream medicine.
I’d been a working journalist for 15 years by 2005 when it felt like the right time to embark on a second career journey… into holistic healing. Three years and four months later, with a Masters degree from Sarasota’s East West College of Natural Medicine, I took my Florida acupuncture license and accreditation from the National Certification Commission from Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine on the road.
Sarasota has remained home since, a beautiful place with a strong natural health culture. When not reading about medicine and enhancing my modality skills, I try to live an holistic lifestyle; walking the dog, cooking organically, watching or playing soccer, traveling and listening to all kinds of music. I recently returned from a fantastic service mission to Puerto Rico organized by Acupuncturists Without Borders.
Many people haven’tyet had their first acupuncture experience.
If that’s you, there’s nothing to be nervous about.
Think about this: by the time you sit down in the waiting room, you must have heard something positive about acupuncture. That’s good. Over a period of time – a week, a month, a day, perhaps even an hour – it’s more than likely going to help you feel better.
The rooms are set up to be calming, with soft music and lighting for deep, healing rest. You leave undergarments on, and very often the entire outfit stays put as well. We might loosen a belt or a button to treat the lower back or, for example, the chest. It might be necessary to roll up your pants leg or sleeve. Occasionally the patient is asked to get into a gown, for a sciatica treatment, for example.
As for the mystery needles, they are extremely thin and flexible, just sharp enough to enter through the skin They come in various sizes based on the part of the body being treated and the patient’s individual sensitivities. By Florida State law, each needle can only be used once before going into a storage box for disposal later on.
You might feel a sensation. The more relaxed one is the better because in that state the nerve endings are less prone to be on high alert. Common sensations are heaviness and tingling. You’ll be asked if you’re comfortable and if any of the needles hurt. There may be a heat lamp on your feet for warmth.
Assuming everything’s OK, it’s time for the healing to begin.
Most people are able to rest because of acupuncture has stimulated the release of natural endorphins and opioids. Many fall asleep. Another 20-25 minutes later, your session is over.
Your first visit, which involves an intake and diagnosis, might take 75 minutes. Follow up sessions last an hour or less.
Most importantly, your healing has begun!
Everything about Four Pillars is amazing! Stumbling upon this place was a godsend. Cheri is an awesome individual who is very caring and enthusiastic in helping you reach your wellness goals. She has created an extremely inviting, relaxing, healing atmosphere and has compiled a very unique, talented team. During my bout with cancer which included treatment, surgery, recovery, along with two very personal losses, they provided excellent advice and care. I owe many aspects of my physical, emotional, and spiritual success to this team and am extremely grateful.
My acupuncture sessions with Josh have been tremendously beneficial. He is a good listener and very creative with his approaches to meet your needs. He put in extra effort and thought in trying to remedy my neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. I’m happy to say that my hands are back to normal and I see substantial improvement in my feet after each session. He is extremely focused to detail and a very talented acupuncturist. In addition to the targeted therapy, my sense of overall wellbeing is in an excellent state after each session and I’ve had many!
I also highly recommend a Reiki session with Pat. She has a background as an oncology nurse and hospice caregiver. My body was extremely depleted from cancer treatment and surgery. She is a very gentle soul who provided an enormous amount of balancing and healing. I felt immediate results during and after my first session. It is always a wonderful experience
I highly recommend that everyone check Four Pillars out! I love this place!
