What is cupping therapy?
Cupping has been around for centuries, primarily made popular though Traditional Chinese Medicine. Specially made cups made from glass, plastic or silicone use vacuum like pressure to create suction over an area on the body. The cups can slide over wider areas of the body such as the back or upper leg, then left in place for targeted treatments.
What does it do?
Cupping creates drastic relief from muscular tension, improves blood and oxygen circulation, and helps range of motion. The suction from the cups hold pressure relief in specific areas of tension or imbalance by bringing oxygen and fresh blood to the area. When left in place, the continuous pressure is similar to neuromuscular or trigger point techniques. By sliding the cups, this motion works on stretching and releasing tight fascia that can hinder range of motion and good posture. It even acts upon the energy lines (meridians) of the body and has profound effects on our organs such as our lungs, heart, bladder and kidneys. There are many treatments that cupping can be used for.
What about bruising?
After a cupping treatment, typically, red, circular marks are left on the areas of focus. This is completely normal and will dissipate between 1-2 weeks, depending on how stagnant the area is. These marks are indications of imbalances within the tissue. Bruising will decrease as the stagnation resolves. By bringing fresh blood, oxygen and Qi (energy) to the area, it creates a flushing effect in the system. This can be considered a “micro trauma” which is a targeted treatment of self healing; red blood cells carrying oxygen flood the area thus activating the healing response in the tissue. This is great for old injuries, work out recovery and chronic muscle tension/fatigue.
Our cupping therapists have specialized certifications that allow them to practice this technique safely and responsibly.
